Drum Lamp Shades

There are many advantages to placing drum lamp shades on to light fixtures you have in your home.  Not only do they come in a wonderful array of sizes, colours and styles they help to reflect light around a room better.  Not only are they capable of diffusing the light outwards through the fabric but up and downwards also. 

As these types of shades tend to be much larger than many other styles it allows the opportunity for you to put larger wattage bulbs in to the lamps.  Which as a result means more light is able to be put out in to the room.   

But as there are so many different styles and sizes of these lamp shades available how is one able to determine which one is going to be right for the lamp you want to put it on?  Below we offer a few tips that you should consider using and will assist you in finding the right kind of drum shaped shade for your lamp.

Tip 1 – To make sure that you choose the right size shade for your lamp make sure that when fitted it will cover over the hardware or socket of the light fitting.  Therefore choose a drum lamp shade that measures around 2/3 the height of what the base of the lamp is.  So if your lamp base measures 21 inches high then buy a drum shade that measures 14 inches in height.   

Tip 2 – Along with making sure that the lamp shade is the right height look closely at the width.  Make sure that when it comes to the diameter of the shade it isn’t too large that the lamp base is over shadowed by it.  But still make sure that it is wide enough to enable it to cast as much light in to the area where being used as possible.

Tip 3 – Although you must make sure that the color of the shade complements the rest of the room’s decor you must also make sure that it allows sufficient light into the room.  Therefore it is worth considering going for a drum lamp shades that are either white or cream in color. 

Tip 4 – Another thing you need to look at before you go out and invest money in any kind of drum lamp shades is how they will attach to the lamp itself.  Some lamps have a harp fitting and this is where the lamp shade then fits.  Whilst others will need to come with an extending arm and ring as this goes over the socket where the light bulb goes in and a ring is used to secure it in place.
